Queen of Hoxton – Home of Hipster Royalty

How do you stand out in one of London’s hippest areas? You go build a wigwam on your roof, set up camp fires and serve hot choc spiced up with some dark spirits… until the end of March anyway. Yes, that’s when the Queen of Hoxton’s ‘WigWamBam’ ends along with your dreams of meeting your London Pocahontas. But hey – that still leaves you a month and a half to go get your native on in one of London’s coolest bars.

At the moment, Queen of Hoxton’s tipi is undoubtedly the hit feature of this bar; serving warm drinks til late and leaving the fires crackling all night, it’s real cosy location to chill out in. And if you’re there after a long day of work, and feeling a lil peckish, venison burgers and wild boar sausages cooked on the enormous Schwenkgrill will keep the tummy rumbles at bay and your hand reaching for your wallet as you line up another munch. The wigwam doesn’t take up the whole roof space however, leaving space for several campfires to blaze away into the night as you roast you ‘smores’ [instructions to making smores can be found on the QofH website] and sip your hot toddy.

But it’s not like the Queen of Hoxton disappears come the end March, no no it remains a permanent fixture on the hipster map thanks to its trendy bar and underground club. Constantly changing graffiti and quirky designs adorn the walls amidst the jungle of wooden benches and tables in the bar area, whilst the club downstairs revels in a darker and more hedonistic vibe. However this place isn’t all about drunken debauchery – the true nature of the QofH is reflected in the various nights that they put on, ranging from sweaty raves to the much more snuggly ‘Tuesday Night Inn’ and art workshops.

Undoubtedly, it’s the roof space that really makes the QofH shine out from the others. From the disappearance of the tipi will bloom the summer roof garden, complete with deckchairs, hanging gardens and an impressive fountain. Come summer, there will be few places nicer to grab a drink and soak up the rays in London than on the roof of the QofH. And in the evening when the sun’s gone in? How about enjoying the Rooftop Film Club with glittering views of Canary Wharf in the background.
